- Ấn phẩmWen fang maogender and migration: Theoretical approaches and practical issues(2023) Dang, Nguyen AnhConventional migration theories have, so far, largely ignored a gender perspective or treated gender as a variable in the analysis of migration, despite the growing number of female migrants worldwide. This paper addresses theneglected relationship between gender and migration in migration theories and policies. It examines the gender dimension in migration decision-making with reference to Vietnam’s situation. The analysis reveals that integrating the gender perspective into theories on migration will help better understand the complex nature of migration. It is important to take into account gender as part and parcel of a broader migratory process. In Vietnam, women empower themselves through laborforce participation and gender equity ideology. Their representation among international labor migrants is significantly increasing. The migration of Vietnamese women, both internally and internationally, is increasingly influenced by gender-segregated labor markets, a trend accentuated by the country’s rapid process of renovation and international integration. As the gender-based approach is not captured in current migration policies and programs, effective measures must be designed to reduce the vulnerabilities of female migrants. In this regard, gender-disaggregated data and more research on gender and migration are extremely needed to reflect the current situation and forecast potential gender impacts at various levels

Recent studies show that this phenomenon is increasing, not only in Japan but also in many countries around the world. There are two conflicting points of view. Most people with positive reactions are those who call themselves 'hikikomori', while negative sentiments, together with great opposition, often come from experts or people outside the hikikomori community, who are concerned about the harmful effects of this way of life.Based on data collected from Twitter (now it is rebranded as X) and using digital methods, this article goes into deep research and analyzes the effects of hikikomori, thereby exploringhow Twitter users react to hikikomori. Despite mixed reactions, most users still agree with the widespread influence of this cultural phenomenon. From the desire to be more socially accepted to provingthat hikikomori can play an important role and deservesmore recognition for thecontributions it makes, while also using it as inspiration to transforminto an “optimistic hikikomori community” not only in Japan but around the world.

The relationships hold a significant meaning in every person’s life, serving as a source of social capital and psychological support and contributing to personality orientation. A prevailing trend is that the more developed the society is, the less close the AS relationship is due to the increased spatial mobility. Whether this occurs in Vietnam amid industrialization and modernization is an intriguing question. Identifying the characteristics of AS relationships and their role in the development of each family can provide a valuable contribution to amending policies on building and fostering Vietnamese families towards prosperity, progressiveness, happiness and civilization. Drawing on the analysis and synthesis of research documents, the article presents some initial findings about AS relationships in Vietnam, including economic-material aspect, sharing obligations and rights in extended families, and other emotional activities. Studies reveal that adult sibling relationships in Vietnam remain cohesive, reflecting the continuation of traditional cultural values such as affection, love, tolerance, and mutual assistance beside some negative aspects. Building on the research findings, the article raises several concerning issues regarding AS relationships to fortify Vietnamese families.
- Ấn phẩmImplementing the grassroots democracy: Theoretical and practical perspectives(2024) Dang, Nguyen AnhThe implementation of democracy at the grassroots level is a method to promote the people’s rights in Vietnam. It is essentially the execution of the motto “people know, people discuss, people undertake, people inspect, people supervise, people benefit” with the key role of the political system. In this regard, the principle that “the Party leads, the State manages, the People masters” plays an important part. From theoretical and practical perspectives, the paper examines the issues of implementing grassroots democracy. It also employs data collected by the national survey on the provincial governance and public administration efficiency index (PAPI) to assess the current situation of the implementation. The analysis results show that the development of appropriate mechanisms and proactive participation of the people in decision-making process are vital determinants of grassroots democracy. Policy recommendations include strengthening the Party’s leadership and the state’s role of management, building a team of state cadres with quality, morality, fairness in performing public tasks, improving the quality and efficiency, enhancingpublicityandtransparency, diversifying the format and mechanism of receiving critical opinions from the people, transferring from formal democracy to substantive democracy at the grassroots.

This study, conducted during the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year, analyzes data collected from questionnaires completed by 352 students at a university in Hanoi. The objective was to identify factors influencing students’ awareness of fire prevention and rescue skills. The findings reveal that a relatively small number of students possess adequate awareness and practical ability to take appropriate action in the event of a fire. Notably, they are initially unaware of how to use fire prevention and firefighting equipment (13.9%), about the evacuation procedures in the event of a fire (8.5%), and basic first aid for injuries (16.5%). Key factors influencing students’ awareness include limited exposure to fire prevention skills, with 55.7% of them reporting only occasional exposure and insufficient opportunities to engage in formal learning and practice, and 52.8% indicating limited opportunities for hands-on training. Based on these results, this study recommends enhancing the systematic delivery of fire prevention and rescue education, and extending the duration of practical fire drills to improve students’ preparedness and their response capabilities.

The study analyzes a number of issues, such as the wave of Chinese migrants from China to Hội An, especially during the political movements and uprisings of the anti-Qing movement to overthrow the Qing and restore the Ming. Given this situation, many Chinese refugees and Ming officials fled to Hội An, escaping the wars and disturbancesin mainland China. They established the Chinese Minh Hương xãin Hội An trading port. The Minh Hương (明香) understood this term to mean “maintaining joss-sticks for the Ming dynasty,” but in 1827 the Vietnamese Court took it to mean the “Minh village” (明鄉)-the character for “village” (鄉) being a homophone of that for “joss-stick” (香). Hence, members of a Minh Hương village included Chinese men married to Vietnamese women, and their descendants. This paper also focuses on the institutional structure and organization of the Minh Hương xã, as well as its relations with local society and local government.
