    Many organic contaminants become sequestered as they age in soil and sediment often resisting extraction and biodegradation and posing lower toxicity. The goal of this research was to identify geosorbent characteristics that can be used as determinants to understand variations in the rate and extent of biodegradation and desorption in soils. To test the hypothesis that the heterogeneity in soil organic matter (SOM) dominantly controls sorption/desorption, SOM was extensively characterized using quantitative pyrolysis GC-MS and solid-state 13C NMR.
