    2019-nCoV in context: Lessons learned?
(2020) Kock, Richard A.; Karesh, William B.; Francisco Veas; Others
First paragraph: The emergence of a new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan creates a sense of déjà vu with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) epidemic in China in 2003. Coronaviruses are enveloped, positive-stranded RNA viruses of mammals and birds. These viruses have high mutation and gene recombination rates, making them ideal for pathogen evolution.1 In humans, coronavirus is usually associated with mild disease, the common cold. Previous emerging novel coronaviruses, such as SARS-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), which emerged in the Middle East in 2012, were associated with severe and sometimes fatal disease. MERS-CoV was less pathogenic than SARS-CoV, with the most severe infections mainly in individuals with underlying illnesses. Clinically and epidemiologically, the contemporary 2019-nCoV in China seems to resemble SARS-CoV. The genome of 2019-nCoV also appears most closely related to SARS-CoV and related bat coronaviruses.2 The infection has now spread widely, with phylogenetic analysis of the emerging viruses suggesting an initial single-locus zoonotic spillover event in November, 2019,3 and subsequent human-to-human transmission. The SARS epidemic in 2003 was followed soon after by avian influenza H5N1 in 2006, centred on the Asian continent and Middle East. Other surprising viral zoonoses that have caused serious disease include Nipah encephalitic virus in pigs and humans in southeast and south Asia in 1999–2014, and large-scale Ebola virus epidemics in 2014–16 and 2018–19 in west and central Africa. Taken together, these events ring alarm bells about disease emergence in the 21st century, and the importance of human diseases originating from indiscriminate contacts with infected animals.

3-tier service level agreement with automatic class upgrades
(North Carolina State University, 2006) Haddad, Reda Nassif
3-tier Service Level Agreement with automatic class upgrades. (Under the direction of Dr. Yannis Viniotis). Tremendous efforts have been spent on devising mechanisms that would provide Quality of Service (QoS) needed by various applications, and network operators have spent a lot of resources trying to fit their networks with differentiated services capabilities. One of the Service Level Agreements (SLA) promising to sell these QoS services is the "triple play" SLA, bundling 3 classes of services targeting voice, data and video. In particular, circuit switched network operators envision the triple play SLA as essential to revenue maintenance, customer retention, and growth. It is their way, through the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) standardization for example, to move all non-IP current and future services, such as voice, onto IP. In this thesis, we propose a "3-tier SLA with automatic class upgrades", an enhancement to the triple play SLA, in that it automatically upgrades lower classes' packets to fill gaps or unused bandwidth in the upper classes. The proposed SLA incorporates a scalable solution to the reordering problem, caused by upgrading lower class-packets to upper classes; the solution does not require per flow state information. We provide a thorough analysis of the QoS performance in terms of goodput, losses and delay of both UDP and TCP sources and show that the proposed SLA maximizes the customer's utilization of the reserved and paid-for bandwidth by maximizing the utilization of the most expensive, better service, upper QoS classes, and provides much greater throughput than the proposed "triple play" model.

3D printing of phase change hydrogels
(Viện Kỹ thuật Nhiệt đới, Viện Hàn lâm Khoa học và Công nghệ Việt Nam, 2026-02) Md Alal Hossain; Shajuyan Ahmed; Md Sabir Hossain; Khan Rajib Hossain
Phase change materials (PCM) can change from solid to liquid at a constant temperature, allowing them to retain more heat than other materials. 3D printing of PCM with hydrogels opens up new manufacturing possibilities by increasing productivity and functional diversity. This article reviews recent advances in phase change hydrogel 3D printing, focusing on metal-infused hydrogels, graphene-based, bio-based PCM, and chitosan-based materials. In particular, a new 3D printing method was developed, in which rheology was modulated using carbomers to produce a variety of functional hydrogels, including magnetic, dual-network, thermosensitive, and other types. Highly loaded PCM/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) ink and phase change organic hydrogel (PCOH) are new options for such encapsulation and thermal stability. This article discusses how hydrogels resemble the extracellular matrix and can be used in bioprinting to support basic biological processes. Despite all the progress, more research is needed to address issues such as the flexibility of PCM and achieving high energy storage density. This review article highlights how hydrogels and 3D printing can have a revolutionary impact. Future directions and potential applications in the field of flexible electronics, responsive drug delivery systems, and tissue engineering are covered in this article.

A balanced edge detector for aeromagnetic data
(Viện Địa lý, Viện Hàn lâm Khoa học và Công nghệ Việt Nam, 2023-09) Vinicius, Theobaldo Jorge; Saulo, Pomponet Oliveira; Pham, Luan Thanh; Duong, Van Hao
One of the most significant challenges in interpreting magnetic data is to mitigate the influence of the magnetization direction in the shape of the anomalies, especially when reduction to the pole fails to position them over the sources. We propose a balanced high-order filter that has low sensitivity to the direction of the resultant magnetization. We consider an edge-detector filter based on directional analytic signals of the vertically-integrated anomaly field. To ensure that anomalies from shallow and deep sources are equalized, we balance this filter with the magnitude of its two-dimensional Hilbert transform. The proposed filter is tested using aeromagnetic data from Apiai Terrane, Southern Brazil. The enhanced map is highly correlated with the study area's NE-SW trend of geological structures. Our results highlight the importance of using the directional analytical signals, which help reduce the influence of the magnetization direction, and the balancing filters, for equalizing the signal of shallow and deep causative sources.

A biomedical engineering approach to investigating flow and wall shear stress in contracting lymphatics
(Tsxas A&M University, 2006) Dixon, James Brandon
Collecting microlymphatics play a vital role in promoting lymph flow from the initial lymphatics in the interstitial spaces to the large transport lymph ducts. In most tissues, the primary mechanism for producing this flow is the spontaneous contractions of the lymphatic wall. Individual units, known as lymphangion, are separated by valves that help prevent backflow when the vessel contracts, thus promoting flow through the lymphatic network. Lymphatic contractile activity is inhibited by flow in isolated lymphatics, however there are virtually no in situ measurements of lymph flow in these vessels. Initially, a high speed imaging system was set up to image in situ preparations at 500 fps. These images were then manually processed to extract information regarding lymphocyte velocity (-4 to 10 mm/sec), vessel diameter (25 to 165 um), and particle location. Fluid modeling was performed to obtain reasonable estimates of wall shear stress (-8 to 17 dynes/cm2). One of the difficulties encountered was the time consuming methods of manual particle tracking. Using previously captured images, an image correlation method was developed to automate lymphatic flow measurements and to track wall movements as the vessel contracts. Using this method the standard error of prediction for velocity measurements was 0.4 mm/sec and for diameter measurements it was 7.0 µm. It was found that the actual physical quantity being measured through this approach is somewhere between the spatially averaged velocity and the maximum velocity of a Poiseuille flow model.

A Biot formulation for geotechnical earthquake engineering applications
(University of Colorado, 2006) Bao, Yu
The mechanical behavior of saturated soil is mainly governed by the interaction between the soil skeleton and the pore fluid, and this interaction may lead to significant loss of strength known as liquefaction under seismic loadings. The main objective of this thesis is to develop and implement a cyclic constitutive model capable of modeling soil skeleton dilatancy during earthquake excitation. The constitutive model is based on the fuzzy-set plasticity theory and enhancement is made on the description of dilatancy behavior under cyclic loading. A robust Biot formulation, in which the governing equations of motion of the soil mixture are coupled with the global mass balance equations, is developed to describe the realistic behavior of saturated soil. The finite element discretization is established without neglecting the convective terms. An unconditionally stable implicit time integration scheme, Hilber-Hughes-Taylor a method is used and an iterative algorithm based on Newton-Raphson method is developed to solve the nonlinear time-discretized problem. A numerical study of sand liquefaction is performed and compared with the centrifuge experimental results to show the capabilities of the proposed formulation on pore water pressure generation and strength loss occurred in loose granular soil deposit under cyclic loading. The computed results show good agreement with the experimental data. The capability of the enhanced fuzzy-set model in simulating cyclic soil behaviors including liquefaction is validated. It is concluded that the developed Biot formulation and computational procedure are an effective means to assess liquefaction potential and liquefaction-related deformations.

A Blockchain-Based Framework for Developing Traceability Applications towards Sustainable Agriculture in Vietnam
(10/7/2022) Nguyen Duc, Hiep; Nguyen Huynh, Tuong; Pham Hoang, Anh
Recently, many governments in the world have been focusing on building sustainable agriculture to improve the life quality of farmers and significantly increase their income. In Vietnam, however, and lack capital for scaling or transforming the production model. One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is that the price of agricultural products does not depend on farmers; efforts but is based on the purchase price of the trader or the market price. Besides, the farmers also maintain farming habits based on regional culture or follow trendy and profitable agricultural products. Those production strategies make this type of product oversupplied, leading to a down in price shortly, so the farmers’ income will decrease. The above problems stem from the lack of information and communication tools between actors in the agricultural value chain, especially between cooperatives, farmers, and consumers. This paper presents a Blockchain-based framework for developing a traceability solution as an effective method of communication between actors in the agricultural value chain toward a sustainable agricultural model. The proposed approach helps to fully convey the production and distribution of agricultural products and the ability to verify traceability information, thereby helping to increase prices and protect the brand of agricultural products.

A brief on impacts of Brexit on the world economy and Vietnamese economy
    (2016)
The referendum in the UK closed with the winning of the leaving side. The new government of Prime Minister Theresa May also declared that the deadline for Brexit was the end Q1/2017. Such event imposed considerable effects on the UK economy as well as the global economy. For Viet Nam, we believe that Brexit would have inconsiderable impacts in both short term and long term as the economic relationship between Viet Nam and the UK is marginal against the relationship of Viet Nam and other major partners such as the US, China or Japan.

A case study for the emissions reduction for coal power plants in Viet Nam
(2012) Savin, Ven Johnson; Kabunga, Hendri Nachiyunde; Johannes, Breit; Xuan, Li Hui
Energy demand in Vietnam rapidly increased during the last decades (1998-2008), with the industrial sector consuming up to 48 per cent of the total 32.0 Mtoe energy used. To enlarge the energy generation, VietNam government plans to install additional coal poweredplants, effectively contributing further to greenhouse gas emissions. Clean Coal Technology (CCT) could be onesolution to minimize these emissions. However, several barriers for the implementation of this technology exist. The analysis of CCT and the identification of barriers hindering the implementation in Viet Nam are an important initial step towards the diffusion of CCT. To enhance CCT adoption in Vietnam, five recommendations are proposed in this study including a supporting framework of regional and international partnerships.

A case-control study of agricultural and behavioral factors associated with leptospirosis in Vietnam
(2022) Hai, Hoang; Ngoc, Do Bich; Others
Introduction: Leptospirosis is a neglected disease in Vietnam. Until now, there has been limited knowledge about risk factors of this disease in Vietnam. The study was carried out to identify agricultural and behavioral factors associated with the transmission of leptospirosis in Vietnam. Methods: This matched retrospective hospital-community-based case–control study was conducted from 1 October 2018 to 31 October 2019. We recruited cases from 11 selected government hospitals in three provinces of Vietnam, while controls were selected from the same communes of cases and matched by age (± 2 years) and sex. Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were applied to determine confrmed cases, while only MAT was used to identify controls with a single high MAT titer < 1:100. Results: 504 participants (252 cases and 252 controls) were identifed. Cultivating (OR 2.83, CI 1.38–5.79), animal farming (OR 8.26, CI 2.24–30.52), pig owners (OR 10.48, CI 5.05–21.73), cat owners (OR 2.62, CI 1.49–4.61) and drinking unboiled water (OR 1.72, CI 1.14 –2.59, p= 0.010) were signifcantly associated with human leptospirosis in Vietnam. Hand washing after farming/ gardening (OR 0.57, CI 0.38–0.86, p= 0.007) and bathing after farming, gardening, contact with cattle and poultry (OR 0.33, CI 0.19–0.58, p= 0.000) were determined as protective factors for this disease. Conclusions: In short, the case–control study has revealed the risks in agricultural and animal practices and protective behavioral factors related to human leptospirosis in Vietnam. The fndings suggested promotion of communication and health education programs targeting health behaviors in daily life and agricultural practices. Using personal protective equipment such as gowns, gloves, and boots during agricultural practices, especially cultivating and animal farming, is most recommended.

A Categorical Data Analysis on Financial Failures in Vietnam, 2007-2013.
Quan, Hoang Vuong; Napier, Nancy K.; Tri, Tran Dung; Kong, Nguyen Thi Hong
In this paper, we examined 256 cases of financial failure and fraud occuring during the recent Vietnam’s chaotic years from 2007 to 2013, employing methods of categorical data analysis. Reported results suggest that the rent-seeking approach, or resource-based orientation, alone does not help explain theoutcome of a business intention while the association between Orientation and Approach is the best-fit predictor.Rampant financial collapse not only increases the cost of funds but also erodes trust in the economy. Entrepreneurship development and creativity capacity building are necessary to improve socio-economic conditions and the environment. This work also introduces intuitive and cognitive factors to predict ex-ante outcome of afinancing scheme.

A chemical genomic approach towards determining the molecular target of anti-proliferative compounds
(Boston University, 2006) Eastwood, Erin L.
Drug target identification is a time consuming stage of the drug discovery process. Chemical genomics offers a solution to this hurdle. In chemical genomics, a target specific chemical ligand is applied on a genomic scale. This technique was used to identify the molecular target of anti-proliferative agents using changes in mRNA transcript levels upon treatment. Whole-genome transcription profiling experiments employed the eukaryotic model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae for small-molecule perturbation experiments in addition to traditional genetics. Chemical genomics was used to examine the molecular target of borrelidin, a macrolide with conflicting published biological activities. The initial transcription profiles showed an increase in the transcript ratios of genes involved in amino acid biosynthesis upon treatment with borrelidin. In yeast, the GCN4 pathway regulates general amino acid control. The accumulation of uncharged tRNA activates Gcn2p which prevents the formation of the eIF-2 complex. In turn, this simulates the translation of Gcn4p, which results in the transcription of over 30 genes involved in amino acid biosynthesis. Experiments using GCN2 and GCN4 gene deletions determined that borrelidin targets the amino acid biosynthetic pathway through GCN4p. The profiling data indicates that an alternative mechanism exists for the translational regulation of Gcn4p other than through Gcn2p, which was confirmed using immunoblot analysis with eIF2 a and phosphorylated eIF2 a antibodies. In the second application of chemical genomics, a diverse collection of synthetic compounds was evaluated in a cell-based toxicity assay. The screen revealed a subset of cyclic sulfones that inhibited growth of A549, human small lung carcinoma, cells. Within this subset, 4-(1-phenyl-lH-tetrazole-5-sulfonyl)-butyronitrile (PTSB) was the most active compound. PTSB was shown to inhibit growth of both wild-type S. cerevisiae and A549. Whole-genome transcription profiling experiments in S. cerevisiae indicated that PTSB is involved in the cellular response to oxidative stress. Analysis of the profiling data using systems biology predicted the thioredoxin pathway as the target. Biochemical assays with thioredoxin (Trx) and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) validated that PTSB inhibits TrxR. The structure of PTSB suggests a novel mechanism of inhibition. This research illustrates the significance of applying chemical genomics to the target validation stage of drug discovery.
